Services

As a writer and small-business owner, I know the challenges of balancing client work, administrative tasks, marketing, and professional development with a personal life and mental health. Yes, we can do it all, but we can’t do it all the time. That’s why it’s so important to connect with experts who can help us out when we need a hand.

And that’s why I’m here—to help you with your writing projects.

I offer several services to help you throughout the writing and editing process.

FAQs

There are four different levels of editing. For a full review of each level, check out this resource article. Right now, I offer two editing services: copyediting and proofreading. If you’re not sure which service is best for you, contact me and tell me a bit about your project. I can evaluate your project and provide a sample edit so you can see how your project will benefit from the recommended service.

When you send me a Microsoft Word file, I’ll use the Track Changes feature while I edit the document. You can learn more about what Track Changes is and how to use it from this overview.

    3. You’ll receive a customized proposal for your project.

    3. I’ll begin working on your project on the agreed upon start date.

    4. You may email any questions as they arise during the project.

  4. Wrapping up

    1. You’ll receive an invoice for the remaining balance.

    2. You’ll receive all deliverables discussed.

    3. You may ask follow-up questions once you’ve reviewed the files.

  1. If desired, we may schedule a phone or Zoom meeting to review any remaining questions you have about the revisions (an additional fee applies).

Formatting

Formatting addresses how a document is laid out on the page. How is the text organized, and what does it look like? Font style and size, line spacing, margins, alignment, and indentations all affect your readers’ experiences.

Choose this service if you need help with:

  • Citations
  • Font style and sizes
  • Headers and footers
  • Headings
  • Indentation
  • Margins
  • Page and section breaks
  • Page numbers
  • Paragraph and line spacing
  • Table of contents
  • Titles and captions for lists, tables, or graphics

With this service, you’ll receive:

  • One annotated, formatted file
  • One additional file with all formatting accepted (“clean copy”)
  • One editorial report to review the updates
  • One customized style sheet detailing the formatting applied to the project

How much will it cost?

Each project is different. Because of that, I provide a customized proposal for each project. It will be a fixed fee, so you don’t have to wonder what your final bill will be. To learn more about what factors affect the cost of a project, read my blog post about editing quotes.

All formatting projects start at $41.00 per hour.

Copyediting

Copyediting, or mechanical editing, focuses on accuracy and consistency at the sentence level throughout your document. This includes grammar, spelling, and punctuation use but also formatting and content details.

Choose this service if you need help with:

  • Application of the preferences stated in your style sheet
  • Clarification of confusing, wordy, or awkward passages
  • Conscious language
  • Grammar
  • Punctuation
  • Repetition
  • Shifts in tone or point of view
  • Spelling
  • Word choice

This service does not include fact-checking, comprehensive rewrites, or restructuring.

With this service, you’ll receive:

  • Basic formatting addressing the table of contents, headings, line spacing, page breaks, and indentation (for manuscript projects)
  • A minimum of two passes of editing, which makes me familiar with your tone and style
  • An annotated copy of your file showing all the recommended edits using Track Changes in Microsoft Word
  • A clean copy of your file that has all the recommended edits incorporated for easy review
  • An editorial report that highlights the document’s strengths plus any issues or areas for development
  • A customized style sheet that records key terms, names, dates, style, and formatting preferences

Proofreading

Proofreading is the last step in the process before publication. I’ll check for any remaining errors before your project is published. The key difference between copyediting and proofreading is how much the text can be altered. When copyediting, I may revise your content, but proofreading, I will only look for things that are technically incorrect.

Choose this service if you need help with:

  • Grammar
  • Spelling
  • Punctuation
  • Typos
  • Spacing
  • Layout
  • Application of the preferences stated in your style sheet

Proofreading does not include fact-checking or rewriting and leave word choice and sentence structure alone unless they cause grammatical issues.

With this service, you’ll receive:

  • Basic formatting addressing the table of contents, headings, line spacing, page breaks, and indentation (for manuscript projects still in MS Word)
  • A minimum of two passes of proofreading
  • An annotated copy of your file showing all recommended edits using Track Changes in Microsoft Word
  • A clean copy of your file that has all revisions incorporated for easy review
  • An editorial report that highlights the document’s strengths and any issues or areas for development
  • A customized style sheet that records key terms, names, dates, and style and formatting preferences (if not provided by you or an earlier editor)

All proofreading projects start at $38.00 an hour.
